Naughty or nice? Bangkok is famous for its nightlife – mostly naughty. Any farang in Bangkok, even as a tourist, male or female, knows about Patpong, Nana Plaza, and Soi Cowboy. Most of this action is geared for men, of course. But if you are a farang woman and want a good night out, where do you go?

Ladies can also have fun in the “entertainment zones.” Pick an outdoor place and people watch. The drinks are usually reasonable and reasonably priced. It can be endlessly entertaining watching the working girls hawking for customers and watching customers select the ladyboys because they are prettier. Does he know or doesn’t he? That is the question! In Nana Plaza and Cowboy, a few catfights are usually on offer with two bargirls fighting over a customer’s money. If you remember the 60s and have a sense of humor, check out Country Road at the Asoke end of Soi Cowboy. There is a band that is so bad, it is thoroughly entertaining… and you can dance, why not? And the shopping in Patpong is great.

If tired of the endless girls-with-numbers scene, check out Silom Soi 4. It is almost exclusively gay men (boys-with-numbers) and can be loads of fun. Get a group of ladies together and have a blast – plenty of outdoor seating for people watching, good food, and honest drinks

Pubs are a good idea. You might want to avoid the ones where the “waitresses” are wearing numbers like in a go-go bar. The décor may be like a pub, it may have numerous sports TV screens, and it may even have live music of some description, but it is mostly in the “naughty”
category and is probably not what you’re looking for, although they can be fun in a group. If you are interested in finding someone you might like to see again, whether that be making a friend or possibly starting a relationship, the numerous English and Irish pubs are best. People are friendly, and you can get to know all the regulars. Many of these have Quiz Nights that are interesting and good fun. Turn up and join a team.

While it can be difficult to find any live music for dancing, RCA has numerous DJ places in a variety of music genres. If techno or trance or any other electronic music is to your liking, just stick your head in a door and see if that DJ suits you. This is usually a young and mostly single crowd, and there are fewer farangs.

Two great places to meet people, have a good time, and do some dancing are: Dubliner’s Pub on Tuesdays and Fridays when Lee Shamrock entertains with hundreds of songs (lyrics transcribed to appeal to Bangkokians); and The Huntsman’s Pub in the basement of the Landmark Hotel, where the superb band Sweet Inspiration entertains with music from all decades and genres.

Always remember, this is Thailand, and any place you find today is just as apt to be gone tomorrow. If you are a late night girl finding yourself at mandatory closing time, get in a taxi and ask the driver to take you somewhere fun that is still open. It is a bit of an adventure into the Twilight Zone, but there are great after-hours places with cool music and fun dancing. Only problem – finding the same spot twice!
